Hard to choose.

Naruto (haters gonna hate)
Fairy tail
Code geass
Gundam SEED
Shakugan no Shana
Astarotte no omocha
Kanon 2006
Shinryaku! ika musume
Densetsu no yuusha no densetsu
Zero no Tsukaima

Would be my picks, hard to choose one, but i'd be tempted to go with Naruto. Mainly because i've being following it for so long.

I think I have different favourite for different genre..

for long series i choose One Piece, because it's long and still half journey..
for slice of life or drama i think Clannad After Story or maybe the most recent Ano Hana still the best..
Sport, no other than Major series..
Action, hard to choose, but i think i will go to Darker Than Black Season 1..
Comedy, Azumanga Daioh and Mitsudomoe..
Sci-fi, Gundam Seed series..
Mystery, xxxHolic..
All-in-one (comedy, action, slice of life, sci-fi, etc), ALL HAIL Suzumiya Haruhi...!!

i think that's all.. ;D

Out of hundreds of series, this would be my top 20 of the moment:
Ano Hana - excellent and subtle, my favorite of last season and maybe this year
Clannad - manly tears! Manly I say!
Cowboy Bebop - an early stop on my journey to becoming an anime fiend
Eve no Jikan - what does it mean to be human?
Full Metal Panic - I love the collision of the different worlds
Ghost in the Shell - the movies, the series, it's all great
Gunslinger Girl - a little dystopian and a lot of awesome
Hanasaku Iroha - so glad this one has 26 eps
K-ON - moe moe kyun! Mio's just too cute
Karin - hilarious take on vampires
MM! - the loudest I've laughed in a while
Monster - creepy and awesome, long enough but doesn't drag on forever
Moonlight Mile - I'd love a third season to this
Otome Youkai Zakuro - sweet and cute romance
Planetes - excellent and realistic SF
Read or Die/Read or Dream - shiny and fun
Satoshi Kon's movies - bending and twisting reality until it buckles and cracks
Sora no Woto - maybe it is K-ON goes to war, but an excellent story
To Aru...Index & Railgun - onee-saaaama!
Toradora - great story, excellent characters, uses the cliches but still fresh

I've inflicted all of them on many others and I'll happily watch them again ... eventually.

Hanasaku Iroha- Slice of life. I love Slice of Life. One of my 2011 Favorites
Kore Wa Zombie Desu Ka?- My favorite 2011 Anime so far. idk, has a nice Aura and a great balance of Action and Ecchi
Shuffle!+Shuffle Memories Extra Chapter- One of the best harem RomComs out there. The fist half is great for ecchi. The second half has great drama while I'm disappointed with the romance choice (Kaede Ftw)
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya- A relaxing and imp overal perfect series. I sort of like Endless Eight. Also one of the only anime I have to watch in English
Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko- Another one of my favorites of 2011. I just have to say Moe-moe-Kyun and be done with it.
Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Rei- The animes that got me back into anime way back in 2007. Holds a special place in my cold, dark, twisted heart.
Koihime Musou, Shin Koihime Musou, Shin Koihime Musou: Otome Tairen Probably my favorite anime series. If you have been on C-Box long enough you would know my obsession with getting a Fourth Season or some sort of Spin-off Series in the world of the OVA
Sora no Otoshimono, Sora no Otoshimono: Forte A great balance of Ecchi and Romance and Drama

Honorable Mentions:
Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou- Great Colour great anime. Actually has a really really enjoyable English Dub.
Sekirei, Sekirei: Pure Engagement- See Above

Aria the Animation, Aria the Natural, Aria the Origination
Lovely, sleepy slice of life set on a tourist trap copy of Venice on Mars in the distant future. Beautiful visuals, beautiful music, a cast of characters that are utterly charming without exception, and just enough magic, sci-fi and gentle comedy thrown into the mix to suit my tastes. It's not the sort of anime that I'd ever sit down and power my way through, as it's simply too relaxing and slow-paced, but over the twelve months or so that I watched the three series, it was like a mug of hot chocolate on a cold winter's day.

...if Aika were here, she'd totally 'hazukashii serifu kinshi!' me for that one. :'D

Azumanga Daioh!
One of the first anime I ever got into in a big way. Irresistibly cute, cheerful and charming, hilarious without feeling like it's trying too hard to be, and surprisingly moving at times for anyone who still remembers their school days. It was also both the last anime I watched before starting to learn Japanese, and the first one I watched without subtitles, years later. It has a special place in my heart for knocking home just how far I've come with the language over the last four or five years. ^_^

Cardcaptor Sakura
A huge part of my childhood. At a time in my life when I had severe issues over my gender, getting together with a friend after school to be unashamedly girly and watch CCS (in its Western incarnation, Cardcaptors) was a great deal of comfort. Though it's definitely a show for younger viewers, I feel that the development of its characters, particularly its two leads, is handled in a very mature, grown up way, and the show doesn't dumb things down for its young audience. The end result being that wrapped in a fairly standard, formulaic magical girl show, you have a genuinely sweet and well-written romance story for all ages. :D

Fruits Basket
For exactly the same reasons that I stated about the manga in another thread. It's not a perfect adaptation, and it only covers a comparatively small portion of the series, but it captures everything I love about the manga, and mixes in a wonderful cast of voice actors and a perfect soundtrack by people who clearly got the series. Episode 5, in particular, sticks in my mind for taking a moment in the manga that was quite sweet and turning it into something beautiful enough to make me cry by the bucketloads. :'D

Full Moon wo Sagashite
Rises above a potentially silly premise and a number of filler-y episodes toward the start thanks to a really strong cast of characters, all of whom had a place in my heart by the end of the series (I'm still more than a little bit in love with Takuto~). The ending is definitely one of my favourites ever!

Haibane Renmei
Like almost nothing else I've seen, anime or otherwise, conjuring a world and an atmosphere that is utterly its own. Deep without being terribly heavy-handed, visually and aurally stunning, and deeply moving.

Nodame Cantabile
Any show that makes classical music so appealing to a younger audience is worthy of praise. ^^ The show captured everything I love about music, and wove that seamlessly into a light romance that is funny, touching and full of great characters. Made me proud to be a pianist! :D

Ouran High School Host Club
Delicious reverse harem is delicious. And hilarious. I watched it far too quickly and mourned its passing when it was over. D: Definitely one of the funnier anime I've seen, with a lovely lead character and some rather touching moments throughout despite its putting comedy first.

Planetes
I'm not especially big on sci-fi when it's more about the science. When the human element is lost in a sea of jargon and technology porn. But this sort of sci-fi, I really, really like. :D The characters are a delightfully motley bunch that you really grow to care for over the course of the series, and far from the space opera of Star Wars or the all too far off utopia of Star Trek, it presents a future that feels plausible, completely believable and close enough to home that it's easy to become involved in.

Oh, and the ending to Episode 7 is so perfect, and gives me goosebumps every single time I watch it. :'D

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Endless Eight is a masterpiece. I don't care what you say.

Higurash no Naku Koro nii: Best story in a long time along with awesome characters.

Toradora!: THIS IS THE GREATEST ROMANCE OF ALL TIME. Up there in with Clannad and ef imo.

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica: Urobuchi Gen + Aoki Ume + Shaft + Kalafina = YOU WIN.

Saki: Moe Mahjong, the battle between oppai and dfc.

Slowly getting back into action here... It's nice to see some activity here, even though I'm still pissed at the loss of all the old material. I was the top poster, you know! And there was some material I should've backed up, like the manga diary. -.-'

My top 5:
1. The Twelve Kingdoms. A imaginative and interesting fantasy world, beautiful art&animation, an epic story, philosophical depth, fantastic character development... The only thing missing is a romance.

2. Fullmetal Alchemist. The 2003 series. A superbly balanced blend of action, comedy, great characters, philosophical depth and political intrigue with a great plot.

3. Mushishi. There's truly profound beauty and wisdom in this anime. Slow-paced awesomeness.

4. Umineko no Naku Koro ni. The most powerful mood I've ever experienced in an anime. Also, a very intriguing plot, beautiful art&animation and great characters.

5. Kaze no Stigma. This is a difficult one, I could well name Toradora, Spice&Wolf, Great Teacher Onizuka, Master Keaton or Asura Cryin' instead. However, I chose Kaze no Stigma because it's simply the most entertaining anime I've ever watched. There's no other anime I've watched as many times. The production quality may be weak and the story simple, but Kazuma is easily up there in my top 5 coolest and most interesting characters, the musics and action are great and the whole thing is simply so perfectly up my alley that I can easily forgive the numerous weaknesses this anime has.

1. Clannad ~After Story~
Nothing much to say here that hasn't been said already. Utterly brilliant.

2. 5 Centimeters Per Second
This is truly art in it's purest form.  It makes you smile, cry, and reflect upon your own life.  Truly inspiring.

3. ef - a tale of memories
This was the anime that made SHAFT into the studio we know today.  Shin Oonuma never even played the visual novel before directing this, yet he managed to make one of the best VN adaptations ever imo.

4. Code Geass
I love this anime purely because it is ridiculous.  I was discussing the Winter 2011 season with a friend once, when he said to me: "You know, every anime seems boring after seeing Code Geass.  It kept you on the edge of your seat ever single episode, and you always wanted to know what happened next." While I don't agree with him completely, I have to agree that Code Geass had an addictive quality that a lot of anime I've seen afterwards seem to lack.

5. Lucky Star
Every otaku's favourite comedy.  You either hate it with a passion, or you confess your undying love for it forever.

I'll probably update this with more once I become more seasoned (and grow a pair -.-), but for now my favorite anime is most likely:

Seitokai no Ichizon
It made me laugh uncontrollably, I too share Ken's goal of the harem ending. (just ask cbox :P) I personally think this anime is better than a decent amount of the animes that it makes references to. I still watch parts of every episode every single day cause I still laugh just as hard as I did the first time watching it. It's the PERFECT pure-hearted comedy and is a work of art. All the girls are awesome and unique, and I can't wait for the second season.

Pure Masterpiece!

oh and honorable mention to Kore wa Zombie Desu ka for introducing me to the most perfect character in the world: Eu

TO BE UPDATED :D

We Still Don't Know The Name Of The Flower We Saw That Day - This is one of the few series to drive me to tears.

Blue Exorcist - It's New. It's blue! Actually one of the better Shonen's I've watched/read.

One Piece - Couldn't leave it out of this list. I absolutely love this series.

Bleach - I only like the manga. The reason. I love how Kubo just draws the battle scenes.

Summer Wars - Another movie that brought me to tears near the end when everyone around the world banned together!

Clannad: After Story - The After Story is, in my opinion, better than the original Clannad series.

Element Hunters - Why hasn't anyone even heard of this show? It's awesome, teaches you about the periodic table, and has a great story!

Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan - More people need to watch this. More.

Rouroni Kenshin - Obviously

And my number one fave of all is...

Angel Sanctuary - A lovely story about a brother and sister who can't help but fall in love. They're freaking angels after all...

Oh dear, this is a tough one. I wont go into why I like them or the artistic merits 'cause I'm too lazy for that.
And here it goes, in no particular order from the top of my head:
Urusei Yatsura
Touch
Kimagure Orange Road
Akira
Crest of the Stars
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Irresponsible Captain Tylor
Nadesico
Karekano
Kodomo no Omocha
Excel Saga
Koi Kaze

My top five in alphabetical order:

Bakemonogatari: Loved the characters and the story of each arc. I'm also one of those people who actually liked the visuals presented by SHAFT. Also, Episode 12 was just fantastic in every way imaginable.

Clannad+AS: The first anime to make me cry like a little girl. Excellent music, lovely characters and touching story.

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya: This movie was just something else. While nothing is perfect, this is what I could describe as the closest thing to it from my perspective. From the visuals/sound, to the characters and the story, everything was just exceptionally well done. It's 2h42m long, but I have rewatched it the week after I have first seen it, and was still not bored at all. It was just a bonus that it focused on my favorite character and not on the titular one, whom I don't love that much.

Haibane Renmei: The atmosphere completely enchanted me. It was a slow shown but still absolutely enjoyable, with genuine drama and important themes. It also made me aware of Yoshitoshi Abe of whom I'm a big fan now.

Texhnolyze: A slow and depressing show, but one with a unique atmosphere again. The characters, the visuals and the themes all add up to a thrilling journey. I also liked the ending, not the usual stuff you see.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien - My all time favorite series. One of my first anime I ever watched. Loved the story and drama, but most of all I loved the ending. It reminds me of School Days with my preference of how it would go.

Clannad: After Story - If you've seen this series I don't need to explain it. Epic drama, almost made me cry, and this series along with Amagami SS are the only two anime I just couldn't wait a week for the new aired episode to come out. I also love the soundtrack.

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2 - Likewise, if you've seen this series I don't need to explain it. Very original, epic action and art, a work of creativity and genius, and has probably the best ending I've ever seen.

One Piece - Hilarious with a great chunk of badass. Great story, very active with little or no down time in the series.

Hajime no Ippo - Great story of determination, I love boxing, it's also hilarious, and it needs another sequel damnit!

Well I'm new to "asian anime" (found this site 4 days ago), I started manga a few months back after a new store open here in town next to the university campus with lot's of imports from France. There is a sense of humour and story telling that I like. I like the fact that, the writer are not stiff (in french we say "coincé") with pre-made concept.

Tonigth I downloaded the first 2 volume of " Ladies versus Butlers!". I crack up laughing so hard that I almost pee my pants. The characters are so lovable, the situation so absurb ... I can't wait to see what the writers have in store.

I tried DL each anime first 2-4 episode to make my mind but many torrent links are dead and I don't have a file server accounts.  I also started reading your comments and find them interesting.

Highsc...boobs of the Dead
One by one, the superbly placed fan service just takes my breath away. The main characters' teamwork is also amazing. Excellent main protagonist, does what needs to be done in a careful manner without overthinking it.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Others say the first adaptation was better. Definitely not true. Brotherhood is definitely better. So much of the plot made more sense and the important back stories were revealed. In this "true" adaptation, the story was grander and more complicated.

Gundam 00
Awesome back stories, awesome battle scenes, awesome plot, awesome landscapes, awesome war, awesome pilots, awesome tactics, awesome girls, awesome... awesome...

Code Geass
Death Note tactics combined with mecha. Makes you have headaches at night. Then you'll dream of the MC's red eye. That's how good it is. Full of surprises too. Ones you've never even had a glimpse of in other anime. This is also one of the very few that made me tear up.

To Aru Majutsu no Index, To Aru Kagaku no Railgun
The characters and concepts are so unique, you never would have thought someone would come up with such a number of interesting aspects and put it into one fantastic story. Railgun is a spin-off of Index, but it has a lot of plot to offer. Most of my female friends prefer Railgun than Index.

Tales of the Abyss
Beautiful scenery and nicely designed characters! They're actually from a game, so it makes sense. The series is an adventure and it makes you feel like you're playing an adventure role-playing game. Also has the greatest character development I've seen, that not even Kenichi, the greatest disciple can beat. The MC came from annoying little son of a prick to a real, amazing hero.

The Tower of Druaga: The Sword of Uruk + The Aegis of Uruk
Another game adaptation... I think. It's basically a dungeon crawler adventure anime. It has a very good plot and breath-taking battle scenes. The mystery also kept me wanting more until the very last episode of Aegis.

Zero no Tsukaima
The concept behind the powers of the main characters got me hooked and nicely placed fan service left me asking for more. The steadily moving plot also kept me from getting bored.

Strike Witches 1 and 2
Air force/military combined with girls with tails and animal ears. They're basically girls with guns that fly. Good enough plot, good enough concept... err, fine, I know! I'm biased because I like aerial combat and cuties! That's also why I liked Infinite Stratos (IS), but fine, I won't include that in the list.

Sekirei
Interesting plot, interesting set of characters but lousy main character. Pfft, fine! I'm biased again because I like... oppai!! Oppai banzai!

Gurren Lagann
My drill will pierce the heavens! Who would've thought there was such an in-depth meaning to his drill? Quite a good concept.

Claymore
Damn good battle scenes! I wish they would continue the series in the future. A few years have gone by, though. There's little hope. It's still worth your time even if the story wasn't finished in the anime.

Angel Beats!
The plot is so abstract and tragic and yet it's so good. It made my heart hurt so much that I deleted it accidentally! Holy crap, give it back...

As for the recent ones...

Fractale
Way too beautiful to be just a series. I thought I was watching a movie! Has a nice mystery to it too.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
Every one of the girls are wonderful in their own way. Erio, the quiet one, is retardedly cute. Ryuushi [RyuuKO!] is energetic and adorable. Maekawa stuns you with her logic, usually because it's either a very wise or a very twisted one. Meme is the main contributor of comedy, and I find her mature charm likable too. Also, if you're the type to dig deeper, actually you can, and there's a concept that the story revolves around -- hope.

Kore wa Zombie Desu ka?
Another anime with a wonderful female cast. Hilarious scenes and good enough plot. No need for additional build-up, the first episode will get you addicted, I guarantee it. So watch. Now. Arguably the best series among the ones in its season.

As for the on-going ones, I think it's too early to tell if I declare them one of my favorites, but I'm watching these closely:
Nurarihyon no Mago Sennen Makyou
Ao no Exorcist
Beelzebub
Dantalian no Shoka
Mayo Chiki!
No. 6

You don't need a fileserve account to download from fileserve, I recommend you use Jdownloader (http://jdownloader.org/) and download stuff from ddls.

And yes there are alot of funny animes out there, I myself have yet to watch LvB but I will soon!

LOL .. The asian anime creator are really "twisted".

Someone sent me a mail and suggested ....
Finally, one anime recommendation - if you love Ladies vs. Butlers, you'll probably laugh your ass off at MM!:

On the twisted side, I also love "Mayo Chiki!". Charming character and evil master. I never dreamed a first day at school could lead to so much trouble.

I can see the "marginality" these have, and why how some would bash such creation in the name of morality. But no less  ... some of these are good piece of work.

I fanally manage to DL the vol 1 of Clanad (real slow, or no link )last nigth ... can't wait to be back home this evening, and why the rave on it.

Don't know why but I like idolmaster. I think it's because of each girl personnality to discover. They are attaching. My cousin like this one verry much. Must be the girl love for fame.

We both like "Hanasaku Iroha" for a strange reason. We of course chear for different caracters. I love the inuendos and twisted humours. She chears when that writers gets when gets "cut" and all twisted out of shape. I got 10 of them downloaded, but wait for my cousin to be here to watch it. Much more funny watching in group. We sure would like to speak japanese, could make our viewing more joyable.

Can't really get into "Ano Hi Mita Hana", but only have 1.5 episode watched.

More watching to do ... (got 5 other series to look at)

Side question:
Three manga I love; "Magister Negi Ma!", "Chibi vampire" and "rosario + vampire". Anyone know if any anime exist under those same type humours or story lines.

tks

All three of those have animes: Negima (two versions), Karin and two seasons of R&V.

If you like those, you'll probably like B Gata H Kei, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, Shinryaku! Ika Musume, ToLoveRu-Trouble, Vandread and Yosuga no Sora - to name some of my favorite ecchi and/or cute comedies.

I also suggest Detroit Metal City, Full Metal Panic, and Toradora along with the shows in the Enticing to Watch (http://forums.hologfx.com/index.php?board=31.0) sub board.
