Anime / Re: The Season So Far...
« on: October 06, 2013, 11:00:40 pm »
There's a lot to choose from this season. Here are some quick first episode impressions.

Favorites so far:
Galilei Donna: The youngest sister is AWESOME! You think the scooter is cool? Just wait ... >:D Mysterious story, shiny animation and visuals, good action and funny comedy parts as well. One worry - it only has 11 eps. I have a feeling I'll want more.
Golden Time: It's been months since I caught up with the manga, time to stop reading it to let the anime stand on it's own. The show looks like a lot of fun and has a good feel to it so far. I didn't know until today that it was written by Toradora's author, so another reason to keep with it.
Kyoukai no Kanata: Great visuals, occasional hilarious moments and a very interesting story so far.
Outbreak Company: From previews and summaries, I kept thinking of the Gate manga. After the first episode, it's taken on a feel of it's own: A lighter comedy with more of an otaku focus and without the battles and military used in Gate. It looks fun and entertaining.
RWBY: We're out of the first action-packed arc and into a more character-driven arc. I'm still enjoying it, but wish the episodes were longer.
Strike the Blood: I'm loving the reluctant vampire and the goofy girl sent to watch over him. With 24 eps, I won't have to worry about it being cut off abruptly (like last season's Blood Lad).

Good. Will watch:
Gingitsune: A cute supernatural shrine maiden story, with signs of good character development.
Log Horizon: Looks fun as long as you can keep your mind away from all the SAO similarities.
Nagi no Asukara: Beautiful scenery-porn as always from P.A. Works. The friction between land and sea dwellers looks interesting for future plot driving. The characters are believable, if a bit excitable. Romantic polygon forming quickly.
Non Non Biyori: Quiet slice of life show set out in the countryside with pretty visuals and a relaxed pace. Exchange student from Tokyo in mild culture-shock. Reminds me of Higurashi without any psycho vibes or mystery.
Super Seisyun Brothers: Four minutes of fun every week, silly comedy between brothers and sisters.
Tokyo Ravens: A promising start. The story has my attention, but why does the MC blush so damn much? :P It looks good, but I have a small fear of some overwhelming angst on the way.
Unbreakable Machine-Doll: The doll reminds me a bit of the little sister from Onii-Ai. Interesting main, good action, comedy, ecchi. Looks fun.
White Album 2: Apparently the VN source was exceptional, so there's potential for a good plot here. The main character also seems solid and someone you don't have to hate - unlike the first White Album which I rewatched recently. It's intriguing so far with pretty visuals.

Mild interest:
Infinite Stratos 2: More adventures with the most oblivious harem lead ever.
Kill la Kill: From the first episode alone, it looks about as crazy as FLCL. Rather retro animation. Since I could never stand to finish Gurren Lagann, my ambivalence here has the same feeling to it.
Miss Monochrome: Somewhat interesting fast-moving shorts, worth four minutes.
Walkure Romanze: Pretty girl jousters, a cardboard cutout male with drama from the past, uses many cliches from fantasy world harem setups. Surprisingly though, the airhead female character can actually retain info and learn from it.

Uncertain, give it a couple more episodes:
Arpeggio of Blue Steel-Ars Nova: Humanity battles alien ships which have cute girl avatars. Waiting to see if this has a feel like Gargantia to keep watching or more like Guilty Crown and drop.
Coppelion: Lots of rave reviews and an interesting concept. However, the visuals were blurry and muted and it just hasn't lived up to the hype for me yet.
Kyousougiga: I'll see if the TV version makes any more sense to me.
Yuushibu: I'm not expecting a lot from this one. The over-the-top fan service seems out of place without a Hyoudou Issei inside the show to appreciate it.

Continuing shows:
Big Bang Theory, Castle, Monogatari series S2, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Uchuu Kyoudai

Marathon later? Watch and delete?
Freezing Vibration, Little Busters! Refrain, Magi S2,

Drop?
Noucome/Ore no Nounai...: A hard-to-believe premise, jokes that didn't make me laugh and characters that don't really interest me. Bug lady reminds me visually of Ben-To.

Sekai de Ichiban Tsuyoku Naritai!: Idol/wrestling fan service with a creepy perv feel to it. The story has an OK premise - that both idols and wrestlers deserve respect. But then the show contradicts itself with the creepy fan service crotch shots and cries of hentai-sounding pain. Animation and character designs remind me of Senran Kagura.
Tesagure! Bukatsu-mono: A bit tough to watch if nobody subs it. The reviews I've seen so far are on the negative side.

Curious, but haven't seen yet:
Pupa: I hope they actually air this one, the total news blackout since July or so has me worried. Looks like a good creepy horror show.

General Discussions / Re: I need to get some Anime mouse pads made

Your timing is about 1,5 weeks too late. You missed out on Holo's huge anime mouse pad fundraiser sale.

Well, watch the Doki main website and possibly this post closely on Saturday when Holo updates: "Most mousemat orders have been posted ... I’ll post an update on the stock levels at the weekend. Those of you who have not paid and also not bothered to answer my emails will forfeit the reserved mousemats on Saturday, when I post update." So you might have another chance if you're quick on the refresh button on Saturday.

Looks like you're out of luck - I didn't find any subbed BDs online for this series.

However, if you'll settle for 480p DVD rips go to http://bakabt.me/148949-nanatsuiro-drops-seven-colored-drops-dvd-polished.html there's even 22 seeds on the torrent.

Kiniro Mosaic

This was a cute little slice of life series with some good laughs. Nothing extraordinary: A Japanese girl named Shinobu goes to visit England for a homestay as a child. She meets and later befriends a cute and shy English blonde named Alice even though they only understand a word or two of the other's speech. Shinobu goes home. Alice learns Japanese and comes to Japan years later in her first year of high school.

I'm not archiving it and probably won't watch it again, but it wasn't a waste of time. The ED song was also quite catchy in a big band sort of way. I'd give it a 3/5.

Edit: Dexter

I also just finished off the final Dexter season. I have happy memories of marathoning the earlier seasons with my late father year after year. It's sad that he missed the final season. I'm not sure how I would have expected the writers to end the show, but I felt a little dissatisfied by the way they chose. Still an intriguing watch.

Anime / New Ah My Goddess OAD ...
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:58:27 am »
If you're in a hurry, here's the first new Ah! My Goddess OAD release I've seen. I haven't heard of this [Waku] person/group before. Based on their blog page, quick and dirty hentai releases and borderline ecchi/H OVAs were the bulk of the output before this. So don't get your hopes up too much for great quality.

Anime / What Did You Just Finish?

I got a 4 TB external last week and I copied the best of my ancient .avis to an old 2 TB drive. This is now plugged straight into the big screen's USB. It saves a little time avoiding the desktop to thumb drive to laptop to HDMI to TV route. I stumbled upon Krozam's post above and I foolishly started watching Scrapped Princess off that drive yesterday afternoon. I hadn't seen it in almost a decade and it ranked pretty good in my faded memory ...

Now that I've finished an accidental 24 episode marathon, awake for well over a day now, "pretty good" is an understatement. "FRACKING AWESOME" might be more accurate. Krozam did a much better job than I can (in my sleep-deprived state) of explaining why the show is so excellent. So I'll just close with a 4.9 out of 5.0 and a torrent link. G'night!

I've been watching for it for a while now. Commie, Doki, gg and Hatsuyuki did the previous OVA so they would be groups to watch. I've no idea if the Doki staff plan on it once they're back from Japan, but Hatsuyuki's site mentions they're looking for the DVD ISO - I'd call that an eventual yes. Give it another few weeks? Or as they say on Doki "soon™."  ;)

Kagihime Monogatari – Eikyuu Alice Rondo - (torrent)

This series dates back to 2006 so it's a little bit old-school, but it was worth the re-watch: Aruto is a big fan of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and does some fan-fiction writing himself. He strongly wishes there was a third Alice novel. One night he sees a magical bunny-girl bouncing across the rooftops and he follows her to the library. He discovers that (mainly large-breasted) girls battle in this Wonderland Space to gain each others' stories. When all the stories are combined, they will form a third Alice novel - The Eternal Alice - and grant a wish.

The plot is sufficiently twisty with some action, some ecchi, magical girls and a hint of wincest. There are 12 episodes and a silly special for #13. I don't think it deserves a full Enticing to Watch thread writeup but it was a fun ride and rates a good 4 out of 5.

Nice! I like the bass line in Dragon Rises and also how the composer blends electric and classical sounds.

Anime / What Kind of an Otaku?
« on: August 07, 2013, 06:09:35 pm »
Well, it helps to distinguish between the two types of otaku. First, there is the Japanese definition: A shameful outcast with an unhealthy obsession, often lacking social graces. Secondly, there is the English speaking definition - like a geek: Proud of their interest (usually obsessive) in something.

In the second sense I can go overboard with anime, graphic novels/manga and books - science, science fiction and fantasy. You might have seen my manga bookshelf, but the other five are overflowing with paperback and hardcover novels, Analogs and Asimov's. I would call myself a Portal/Portal 2 otaku, having played each dozens of times, but only those two games. I have played about 10 visual novels/eroge but those are not a big part of my life. I was a heavy metal otaku in the late '80s and early '90s, but my musical tastes have branched out a lot since then. I know a lot about silicon chip fabrication, but that's work and not play. I'm also a bit of a beer snob, liking specific imports and microbrews over the love-in-a-canoe brews[1] many other Americans prefer. I can recognize a handful of seiyuu voices from show to show, but Atsuko Tanaka and Kugimiya Rie are the only two names that stick in my head.

TL;DR Anime, graphic novels & manga, books, Portal/Portal 2, good beers.

Their new album 13 is my favorite Sabbath in years. Who cares if they're in their 60s, they still kick ass! Sad that they couldn't get an agreement with Bill Ward, but Brad Wilk does a good job on drums.

It's a little strange seeing the actual music video for this one instead of the Death Note OP2 visuals. I always loved it when Ryuk would victory dance with his apple.

The other day I was rewatching the Petal AMV over in the favorite AMV thread, and I got curious about the haunting piano music. First I found the full-length version of Primavera.

I've since acquired some of Ludovico Einaudi's albums and have been listening to a lot of his music. I really like Divenire and Nightbook. Einaudi is a classically trained Italian piano player and composer. He's done solo piano work, lots of soundtracks, piano with string quartets or orchestra and he's recently started adding electronica to his music.

Right now I'm listening to his 2010 concert from London's Royal Albert Hall again.

Monty Oum has made some amazing animated shorts - his Dead Fantasy series pits the hot female characters from the Final Fantasy and Dead or Alive video games in battle against each other. He has a new collaboration with Rooster Teeth called RWBY (Red, White, Black, Yellow - pronounced "ruby"). Four trailers were released over the last 9 months for this new weekly show. Most excellent!

It's a 3D CGI anime in all respects except that it was created in Texas with English dialogue rather than in Japan. Everything else feels so very anime-like: Watching the first episode, my eyes were flickering to the bottom of the screen by habit looking for the non-existent subtitles. The first nine episodes of RWBY are online at the Rooster Teeth website and they're 5 to 13 minutes long. The first season is complete on their YouTube channel, and I haven't heard when the second season will begin.

Final edit: Episode 8 finishes off the first major arc of the show and is the best installment so far. It's time to stop my OCD re-editing of this post as new eps are aired. :)  The rest of the season can be found at the website or YT channel.

Memories

Drama, Horror, Psychological, Sci-Fi
MyAnimeList overview - Torrents: 720p, 480p

Memories is a collection of three short films produced by Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame. My favorite of the three is Magnetic Rose, whose script was written by Satoshi Kon - another whose work I've loved in anything he does.

Magnetic Rose focuses on a deep space salvage ship which receives a distress signal. They find a giant space station surrounded by derelict ships and an anomalously strong magnetic field. Two crew members enter the station to find the inside decorated like an opulent opera house, but in varying states of decay. They learn the station was owned by an opera diva named Eva Friedal, suspected of the murder of her husband. As they explore further, strange sights and encounters assail them.

In Stink Bomb a lab technician with the flu mistakenly takes an experimental drug that reacts with his flu shot. He soon becomes a walking weapon of mass destruction due to his pestilential body odor.

Cannon Fodder is set in a walled city that is always at war. Each building has a cannon and the entire population is devoted to maintaining and shooting these cannon.

The film dates from 1995, so the animation is a bit old, but each short has its own unique charm. It's well worth the time, if just for the intense psychological trip of Magnetic Rose. However, the black humor in Stink bomb is fun as well as the thoughtful nature of Cannon Fodder.
