Music / Re: Music Genre Poll
« on: July 18, 2011, 03:39:06 pm »
So many of the strange fusions and mashups I like can't really be classified: Apocalyptica [classical x metal], Bond [classical x pop], Deathmøle [webcomic author virtual band], MC Frontalot [nerdcore hiphop], Pallomember's mashups [metal x pop] and many more odd things. This is above and beyond my '80's metal foundations that expanded to electronic/ambient and classical over the years.

@A.H. this comes pretty easily to me, maybe since I've been playing it off and on for most of a decade. The rough part for me is deciding on a good random string without too many uncommon letters. Anyway ...

Music / Re: That's quite talented...
« on: July 16, 2011, 02:08:08 pm »
I don't claim much talent, but I have made my own instruments and learned or composed a handful of songs on them.

There's a rather new instrument called the Hang that's like an inside out steel drum one can play with their hands. It sounds amazing but is very expensive and difficult to get a hold of without a trip to Bern, Swizerland.

The instruments I made are called Hank Drums, invented by a talented guy named Dennis Havlena as a low cost DiY imitation of the Hang: Take a new and empty propane tank, follow the pattern on Mr. Havlena's website and cut eight U-shaped tabs of different size. Get them tuned in and you have a fun instrument that sounds kinda like the Hang.

Here's what I have recorded on my Hank drums:
Funeral March of a Marionette AKA the Alfred Hitchcock theme song
Sunset Hank - time lapse clouds video with Hank drum audio
Hank Drone - a little song fragment
Metamorphosis - my most ambitious song
Last Words - a little sad thing I put together when I heard Satoshi Kon passed away

I've made a few other assorted music videos too, but that's drifting from the topic.

Yes, I know of this as Acronymania. I occasionally play it with license plates of cars I pass when driving. Anyway...

General Discussions / Re: Video Games!
« on: July 15, 2011, 03:01:17 pm »
Apart from a handful of visual novels, I hadn't played any video games this century. That just changed this month: I'd seen Portal memes for a while, as well as hearing songs from both games. It finally reached critical mass in my head, so I've been playing Portal and Portal 2.

While Portal was short it was excellent. It took ~6 hours to finish the first time and I played it through again probably a dozen times in the week I waited for Portal 2.

I got Portal 2 this week and I made it to the end boss battle in an 18 hour binge. Having just recovered from the sleep deprivation I'm preparing to dive back in. :D

Anime / Re: The Incest Genre in Anime...

@Akashic of the ones you mentioned, OreImo is also my favorite.

With all the different spins on the subject it seems like everybody wanted to cash in on the genre in the same year. It was a little too much at once for my liking. By the time Onii-chan no Koto came around, I was tired of the theme.

An older series Koi Kaze (2004) was interesting in how seriously it took the matter. It had a lot more drama than the lighthearted recent examples of the genre.

Anime / Re: Original Material?
« on: July 12, 2011, 08:40:26 pm »
Even if they were adaptations, I've almost always found the anime first and then occasionally looked up the manga or VN afterward. My one exception was reading a few chapters of Usagi Drop online last year (?) and it was a strange sensation of deja vu watching that first ep.

I like and approve of original content, but my opinion won't have much effect on the industry as a whole, where sales figures and money dominate.

Two recent adaptations I thought good were Amagami SS and Yosuga no Sora. I liked their flows in how they went back and followed the different routes rather than trying to meld all of the routes into one indecisive protagonist. I also liked how the YnS TV airing only went back to the last save point rather than all the way to the start. While I enjoyed Shuffle as an anime, the protagonist came across as more likeable when the routes and emotions were distinct in the VN.

Anime / Re: Your Favourite Anime
« on: July 12, 2011, 08:05:43 pm »
Out of hundreds of series, this would be my top 20 of the moment:
Ano Hana - excellent and subtle, my favorite of last season and maybe this year
Clannad - manly tears! Manly I say!
Cowboy Bebop - an early stop on my journey to becoming an anime fiend
Eve no Jikan - what does it mean to be human?
Full Metal Panic - I love the collision of the different worlds
Ghost in the Shell - the movies, the series, it's all great
Gunslinger Girl - a little dystopian and a lot of awesome
Hanasaku Iroha - so glad this one has 26 eps
K-ON - moe moe kyun! Mio's just too cute
Karin - hilarious take on vampires
MM! - the loudest I've laughed in a while
Monster - creepy and awesome, long enough but doesn't drag on forever
Moonlight Mile - I'd love a third season to this
Otome Youkai Zakuro - sweet and cute romance
Planetes - excellent and realistic SF
Read or Die/Read or Dream - shiny and fun
Satoshi Kon's movies - bending and twisting reality until it buckles and cracks
Sora no Woto - maybe it is K-ON goes to war, but an excellent story
To Aru...Index & Railgun - onee-saaaama!
Toradora - great story, excellent characters, uses the cliches but still fresh

I've inflicted all of them on many others and I'll happily watch them again ... eventually.

Anime / Re: The Season So Far...
« on: July 12, 2011, 07:28:38 pm »
So far, Usagi Drop is my favorite new show of the season. I read a couple chapters of the manga online, but ages ago, over a year(?). So for now I'm getting a strong sense of deja vu and I know I'll like this series. Natsume Yuujin-chou San is another happy and familiar tale as it goes into it's third season and the same is true with Blood-C. I'm also happily continuing Hanasaku Iroha and Steins;Gate from last season. I'm looking forward to Higurashi's new OVAs and Appleseed XIII.

It would be nice if Mayo Chiki turns out as funny and offbeat as MM! but it's too soon to say. I might also follow Kamisama Dolls and No. 6. This all depends on the next few episodes. R-15 looks like it might be good once the blue rays come out ;).

I haven't seen Kamisama no Memochou, Ikoku Meiro and Vitamin X Addiction, but I'm curious about them. I may also check out Manyuu Hikenchou.
