Doki Fansubs / Blick_Winkel - A man(?) shrouded in mystery
« on: July 28, 2011, 11:49:38 am »
Name: Blick_Winkel
Rank: Translator extraordinaire
Power rating: 7.5/10
Age: Unknown
Service: Doki: 3+ months, Elsewhere: unknown
Interests: Every type of Japanese media you can think of.

The origins of Blick_Winkel before he came to Doki are largely unknown. Some say he is on the run from various authorities after being framed for an unknown crime (possibly related to his stash of lolicon hentai), others say he is just another NEET who had been thrown out of his apartment for not paying the rent.
All we know is, late one night he arrived at Holo's doorstep, a lone stranger seeking shelter from a passing storm. He brought with him a wealth of knowledge on all things Japanese, and Holo immediately set about recruiting him into the group. After negotiating a sizable amount of lolis as payment, Blick finally agreed to join as a translator.

If you look hard enough, traces of Blick's influence in the fan-translation world can be seen everywhere, including manga scanlation groups and VN translation projects. However, he is a mysterious character, and no one except for Holo has ever seen his real face.

Once he joined Doki, he very quickly revealed his incredible translating prowess, which led some to question whether he was truly human. Wild rumours soon began circulating. One theory states that he is in fact a translating android developed in secret by the CIA to decipher intercepted communications between members of the sinister organisation known as the Nihon Hikikomori Kyokai (NHK). A rudimentary diagram of such a machine is shown below:

Of course, these claims have yet to be verified, and Blick refuses to answer any questions about them.

He is known around the staff channels as "Mr. Pixiv", as he often likes to share his unique taste for anime-related pics with us. (Like this, for example).
That said, he has subtly suggested that he may have an ulterior motive in linking all of these strange images;
[16:01:04] <&Blick_Winkel> My goal is to make everyone here go blind
[16:01:11] <&Blick_Winkel> scar their eyes permanently

Despite all this, he remains the ever-reliable go-to person whenever there are any TL-related issues or questions, and valued member of the Doki family.

Helium walked into a bar.
The barman says to him, "We don't serve your type here."

Helium doesn't react.

General Discussions / Re: Light Novels

Toradora and Haruhi are the two that I recommend to new LN readers.  Toradora has been fully translated. All but the last 2 books of Haruhi (one of which came out earlier this year in Japan) have been translated as well, but you won't find it on baka-tsuki because it has been licensed. A quick google search will fix that though.

General Discussions / Light Novels
« on: July 19, 2011, 04:19:54 pm »
I thought this was a notable exception from our discussion boards, so I made a general thread. Light novels are always forgotten ;_;

I'll start off by listing a few of my favourites:
1. Haruhi series
2. Toradora
3. Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu

To Aru Majitsu no Index is another really popular one.  I haven't got around to reading it yet, though.

So, what other light novels have you read and enjoyed?

Anime / Re: Your Favourite Anime

1. Clannad ~After Story~
Nothing much to say here that hasn't been said already. Utterly brilliant.

2. 5 Centimeters Per Second
This is truly art in it's purest form.  It makes you smile, cry, and reflect upon your own life.  Truly inspiring.

3. ef - a tale of memories
This was the anime that made SHAFT into the studio we know today.  Shin Oonuma never even played the visual novel before directing this, yet he managed to make one of the best VN adaptations ever imo.

4. Code Geass
I love this anime purely because it is ridiculous.  I was discussing the Winter 2011 season with a friend once, when he said to me: "You know, every anime seems boring after seeing Code Geass.  It kept you on the edge of your seat ever single episode, and you always wanted to know what happened next." While I don't agree with him completely, I have to agree that Code Geass had an addictive quality that a lot of anime I've seen afterwards seem to lack.

5. Lucky Star
Every otaku's favourite comedy.  You either hate it with a passion, or you confess your undying love for it forever.
