Hehe... I found something that should prove helpful in getting people to read Negima:

Not that it's bad in the beginning, but these days it's just awesome.

My own choices:
Date: Winry - A little too... tomboyish for my taste, though passable looks.
Sex: San - She's a mermaid, not a fish. -.-' And she has a human form. I'm not exactly a fan of the art style, but she's cuter than Winry nonetheless. Nice personality, too, a serious contender for the marry-choice.
Marry: Mika - Loli though she is, her personality is nice. Sweet, yet never boring (unlike her big sister). Besides, I think she'll grow up to be a beautiful lady.

For that, you deserve +1 karma. I still curse the day when the author of the Kaze no Stigma light novels kicked the bucket. I wanna know more about Kazuma's past! :'( I also want more Kazuma + Ayano + Ren action. There's a reason why KnS novels are virtually the only ones I've read among the multitude of light novels that I want to read. Though only two of them are translated so far, I'll most certainly read the rest some day, whether they get translated or not.

Also, I forgot Taichi Hiraga-Keaton from my list. Such a wise man, a truly admirable adult character.

Three so bad choices... :/

Date: Konata - The drawing style of Lucky Star is so damn crude, and based on the first ep, I care nothing for any of the characters.
Sex: Safu - Bland, not particularly attractive, but not outright bad looks or personality. Judging from the first episode.
Marry: Haruhi - She's a bitch, but at least she's cute and quite interesting. It goes without saying that marrying her would bring me a shitload of responsibility, but even then she's preferable to the other two.

Let's see... This'll probably take some time, since I have no ready list even in my mind, that's why I've pushed this off, but tonight I have some time.

My all-time favourite anime character is probably Yagami Kazuma from Kaze no Stigma. Not only is he among my top 5 coolest male characters, he also possesses a very, very intriguing past, and his interaction with Ayano is often hilarious.

My favourite female character is probably Beatrice from Umineko no Naku Koro ni. Beautiful character design, a delightfully conflicting (and rather insane) personality and a godlike seiyuu doing quite possibly her best role.

Others in no particular order:
Alucard from Hellsing - Chillingly cool, he was my first touch to what I call the "Japanese type of coolness", which I have grown to love.
Edward Elric, FMA - If I were to cosplay one day, I'd probably cosplay Edward. With his wisdom and atheist mindset, you could even say that he was something of an idol for me, though I was already 15-16 when I first watched FMA.
Sendou Erika, Fortune Arterial - Though the anime was a disappointment overall, I can still say that it's the same character that I got a crush on when I read the visual novel. She's damn near my ideal woman, or at least that's how I felt back then.
Touwa Erio, Denpa Onna - The one and only character to ever make me completely and utterly surrender to moe.
Evangeline A.K. McDowell, Negima - more because of the manga than any of the anime adaptations. There's never been a loli so f*cking cool.
Nara Shikamaru, Naruto - I wanted one character from Naruto, and after pondering characters such as Gaara, Neji and Jiraya, I finally decided on Shikamaru. He's not immensely cool like Gaara, or hilarious like Jiraya, you might even say that he's not among the deepest characters in Naruto, but he's so very... interesting.
Senjougahara Hitagi, Bakemonogatari - A very interesting character, somehow she's both yandere and tsundere, yet she manages to avoid the worst of both stereotypes. I wouldn't go out with her, though, she's f*cking scary.
Holo, Spice and Wolf - Charming in a very rare way for an anime character. I love her dialogue, and she's not lacking in depth and dimensions either.
Katsuragi Keima, The World God Only Knows - A gaming otaku who finds his way into any maiden's heart with incredible psychological methods, yet never abuses his power - on the contrary, he bestows them wisdom so deep that it's easy to miss in such a light-hearted show. A very, very interesting character.
Urahara Kisuke, Bleach - Bleach, much like Naruto, has an army of interesting side characters, while the main characters are boring as hell. Urahara is my choice from Bleach, thanks to his mysteriousness, coolness and amusement value.
Kurei, Flame of Recca - He's cool from the start, and he does gain some serious depth in the anime, but he gets even more interesting and multi-dimensional in the manga after the anime ends. One of my all-time favourite anti-heroes.
Kamijou Touma, To Aru Majutsu no Index - One of my favourite shounen protagonists, he says some damn good things occasionally, and his nonchalant kind of coolness is much to my taste. Also, he actually uses his brain in battle, instead of pushing through with sheer willpower and ridiculous stamina, or overwhelming power, like so many other shounen heroes.
Nakajima Youko, The 12 Kingdoms - A prime example of how skilled character development can make a boring, dislikeable character into a very interesting and likeable one. There are many such characters in Juuni Kokuki, my favourite anime.
Integra F.W. Hellsing, Hellsing - So. Damn. Cool. Cool female characters are rare, only three come to mind readily: Evangeline, Revy and Integra. Revy is my least favourite of them, so I'm omitting her from the list.
Ushiromiya Maria, Umineko - Perhaps the deepest, most interesting child character that I know. And a very fine blend of scary and cute.
Nura Rikuo, Nurarihyon no Mago - While his day persona is a bit boring most of the time, his night persona is just made of cool. It's rare for a male lead of a shounen fighting anime to be so chillingly cool, so I feel Rikuo deserves his place among my very favourite characters.
Ookami Ryouko, Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakama-tachi - Probably my favourite tsundere character, expertly balanced tsun- and dere-sides, and rather deep, too.
Vash the Stampede, Trigun - Few characters are so hilariously funny and so damn cool, with an intriguing backstory to boot.
Onadera Karen, Onegai Twins - Probably my favourite little sister -type character. Absolutely adorable, even if her character design isn't quite match for the beautiful designs in Denpa Onna. Characters like her make me wish I had a little sister...
Amanojaku, Ghost Stories - Likely the most interesting pet character I know. Kind of an anti-hero, his conversion from an "evil" demon into a more or less "good" person is very well done in the show.

So many others I'd like to add, but I suppose these are the top of the top.

Oh, Id anime would be totally epic and awesome. Arago would be nice, too. I can see Arago happening soon-ish, but not Id, since it's a manhwa and those get rarely animated.

Date: Hina - My least favourite among the Hoshizora heroines, though as I said, they are all good.
Sex: Meme - I don't mind older, she's hot and I bet she'd be interesting...
Marry: Tsumugi - hands down the hottest and personality-wise most to my taste.

Fail Date: Charl - Just out of spite. I'm fed up with all the IS fanboyism here, it's really not worth it.
Sex Once: Mio - I've never seen an episode of K-on, so I only have doujins to go with when imagining her personality, and we all know those are generally unreliable, so I'm taking the safe choice.
Marry: Ibuki - because she's the only one left. One of my least favourite heroines in Hoshizora, but all Hoshizora heroines are cute and quite acceptable personalities, so it's not a problem.

Iris Zero by Pro Shiki and Hotaru Takana

From now on, I think I'll accompany my "diary" entries with an image.

I don't know how I was able to put off reading Iris Zero until now, but I'm glad I did. I followed it from the start until the 7th chapter (I even posted in my old manga diary about it) and then something made me take a break, which come to be a long one. Quite conveniently so, because the 10th chapter begins the first long arc, and I sure am glad I didn't read it until its concluding chapter, the 20th, was out. There are some bad cliffhangers.

For me, Iris Zero is the rare kind of manga where every single page is an enjoyment on its own. The art is excellent (and thankfully the scans are good quality), every line of the dialogue feels important, every panel is worth paying attention to. It lacks all the boring "filler" material, and yet it also lacks any unnecessary sense of urgency. The storytelling is damn near perfect in every way, save a few hard-to-spot plotholes.

Let's start with the art. The picture above is coloured in a special way, so let me give you an example of the b&w art:

Beautiful, isn't it? This manga has a very clear and pleasant art style, where the panels are arranged with skill, where the emotional, dramatic and dark moments are all presented with equal skill. The girls are all really cute, and the guys, while they may seem ordinary at first, they all have some really cool moments. Last, but not least, the expressions are truly fantastic. There is strength in the style's simplicity, I can't help admiring the skill that makes every panel worth paying attention to, without relying on any kind of complex artistry.

The settings are quite simple, based on one conceptual innovation: everyone around the main character has a supernatural power, he alone among the important characters is what we think as "ordinary". Sounds interesting, but only as the settings for a short story, not really much potential for a long series, right? Well, these authors have apparently made it their mission to prove that kind of thinking wrong. Four volumes, and the story just keeps getting more interesting, without really adding any major elements into the settings. High school settings, practically no action, it's all just slice of life and detective stuff with a strong supernatural flavour and a romantic undertone.

It works far better than you'd expect: I've rarely been as excited by a battle manga as I was all the time while reading the arc that spanned from ch 10 to 20. This is a story that allows you to think and enjoy it, while not forcing you to do it, like most of those complex, psychological, dark-toned manga (Death Note, Liar Game etc.) It's not the most intelligent story I've read, there are a few plotholes here and there (the downside of the convenient abilities almost every character possesses is that they tend to open plotholes, especially the one that detects lies), but it's just twisty enough for my taste. It has moments of darkness and psychological depth, without ever getting truly depressing and heavy to read. Excellent balance, just as I like it.

The dialogue deserves a paragraph of its own. It's thorougly brilliant, never rushed yet always meaningful. Together with the art it makes the emotional scenes truly touching and the dramatic scenes truly cool. Every line has a purpose, whether it is plot-related, character-deepening, dramatic, funny or just a plain name or sound in the right place. I love the flow of the dialogue in this manga. Also, I really have to give the translator and editor the recognition they're due for their excellent work on this manga.

While the mysteries are all superficially centered on the "Iris", the supernatural, sight-related abilities that nearly every young person in that world possesses, in truth they're all character-related and heavy on psychology. While the protagonist's friends all have useful Irises, it's his ability that is always on the key role in the solving of the mystery. His ability to think from the POV of other people and make connections. He's the kind of "detective" who gets inside the heads of everyone involved and builds the picture from there. That's what makes him interesting, he's the rare kind of protagonist who's seemingly powerless, but actually very intelligent. There are other dimensions to his character, but to me, the most important thing about him is his intelligence. I'm thoroughly tired of stupid protagonists that get through every problem with hard-headedness.

So, Iris Zero is very character-centered and psychological. Well, it's a good thing that it's also one of the first manga I've ever read where every single major character is interesting. Not one of them is annoying in the slightest, they all have very distinct personalities and their own appeal. The main female character is ridiculously adorable and has the ability that's usually associated with a shounen protagonist: the ability to affect people with her words and deeds, her conviction. Her best friend has a discordant personality despite having a strong sense of justice, and the male lead's best friend has the most interesting, dark-toned Iris and excellent acting abilities. Then there are two more major characters who both have complex, central roles in the long arc which had me figuratively speaking sitting on the edge of my chair. But now I'm simplifying things. Each of those characters is remarkably multi-layered, and I fully expect to see more character development and layers unveiled in the future.

Finally, a word on the romance. So far love has played a prominent part in both dark and light parts in this manga, being a major motivator and driving force for many characters. Thankfully, it seems like there won't be a love triangle involving the male lead, even if the female lead is very popular. It seems like a very clean-cut, sweet romance with the potential to even make me cry. It's possible that the authors will start stalling, get scared of actually making something of it before the end - but since this is a seinen manga and so far it hasn't let me down about anything, I hold my hopes high.

I had forgotten how good this manga is when I posted my top 5 list in the other thread a while back - today I corrected the mistake and put Iris Zero in its rightful place as my fourth-favourite manga. I do hope it gets a good anime adaptation some day, because this gem seriously needs more exposure and acknowledgement. If I were to rate it like I rate my anime, I'd probably give it either 4.5 or full 5 stars, that's how good it is.

Music: Poets of the Fall. Mostly Save Me, but in the darker-toned moments I listen to some others, like Carnival of Rust, Shallow and Dying to Live. In the really romantic, atmospheric moments, Rewind.

Uh... I only wrote this much because I love the manga so much, I swear this won't become a trend! >.<
