Visual Novels / Re: My Clannad (& Tomoyo After) diagram project.
« on: April 15, 2013, 09:16:00 pm »
I was wondering if i could get all the SEEN files (or instructions on how to extract them) of the fully translated version of Tomoyo After for this project.

The ones on Baka-Tsuki are woefully incomplete...

Edit:  I used kprl to extract the SEEN files - but they are in .sjs and .ke format.  the Kepago files do have the english text in them, but it's filled with other code (that i'm not interested in).

the .sjs files look like this:
Code: [Select]
// Resources for SEEN0628.TXT

<0000> June 28th (Mon)
<0001> \s{{-val-} strS[1901]}
<0002> \s{{-val-} strS[1901]}
<0003> \s{{-val-} strS[1901]}
and the text itself is in the .ke files.

I've looked, but i dont see a nice way of getting them like:
Code: [Select]
// <0000> 6月28日(月)
<0000> June 28th (Mon)

// <0001> \{朋也}「やっと、ひとりで回らせてもらえるようになったよ」
<0001> \{Tomoya}"He's finally letting me do the rounds on my own."

// <0002> \{朋也}「ある意味、ひとり立ちかな」
<0002> \{Tomoya}"In a sense, it's like I'm independent...probably."

// <0003> 俺は子供のように、自慢してしまっていた。
<0003> I was boasting like a child.

// <0004> \{智代}「じゃあ、今日はひとり立ち祝いか」
<0004> \{Tomoyo}"Then, why don't we celebrate your independence today?"

maybe i'll just have make a script that modifies the files.

I still would prefer to have the originals...

Well, if you're serious about contributing, and you really want to learn, there are a couple of tutorials available on how to use C++:
http://www.cplusplus.com/doc/tutorial/introduction/
http://www.cprogramming.com/begin.html
I'd ask swiss if he could teach you (assuming you really want to help), but I'm afraid he's way too busy for that...

If i didn't have my own projects already, or didnt work a full time job, i'd jump at that.

Suffice to say, jumping into a project like that, with no real knowledge of the language, would make me feel kinda like a script-kiddie.  (though it is how i learned Java, and became the project leader of Minecraft Land Generator...)

The idea intrigues me though...  I might poke around the source a bit.

If you ever have the time, and feel like trying, I say go for it! ;-) We all initially start at scratch after all, but you're already way past that. ^^

lol, yeah.  Hell, yesterday i celebrated the 20th anniversary of getting my first computer.  An Apple IIe, where to do anything, you had to program in BASIC.  I quickly learned BASIC at the age of 7.
Code: [Select]
10 PRINT "HELLO WORLD"
20 GOTO 10
ahh, memories...

Well, I did submit a pull request to rlvm to get the ball started on the Tomoyo After .dll issue...  but its got a long way to go before anything is functional.

I've noticed that with repeated playing of Tomoyo After, that i'm seeing less and less scenes with the blue leaves/ivy around the text box.  what is the significance of this?

My first play had blue ivy until i got to Tomoyo After: After.  then the leaves vanished for that section.  Now I'm only seeing the leaves occasionally in the earlier sections.

I really noticed this when i had two Tomoyo After games running side by side (one running in RLVM and one in Wine - as i'm using linux).  the Wine window was a fresh install, the RLVM save had been played through a lot.  The fresh save file had the leaves, but the old didnt.

Apparently Clannad and Tomoyo After have been released on android by Key themselves.  (though i cant purchase it due to region locking)

That may be a better option for a translation project...

Right, so I just talked to swiss. He told me that the way the game works is the SEEN.TXT sends "op codes" (basically, a number that translates to an action) within the actual game. Now, Elliot Galaysher, the RLVM creator, decoded them for most of the game, but he didn't do the ones for D&T. We've contacted him, and he's kind of willing to help, and swiss could also do it, theoretically, if he spent some time figuring out how it works, but it's a LOT of work, so neither of them has the time needed to do it right now. So if we do work on trying to fix the problem in the future, it will be a while from now, I'm afraid.

swiss tells me that if he does work on it, it will be through RLVM's Git repository, so if anybody else wants to help and work on it (whether you know how Git works, or are thinking of learning), feel free to do so. RLVM is open source after all. Look here for details on how to use Git and GitHub: https://help.github.com/articles/fork-a-repo  And after that, look here for details on how to work specifically on RLVM's Git repository: http://www.elliotglaysher.org/rlvm/contributing.html

Finally, one more thing: You might ("might" being the key word here) be able to use WINE (http://www.winehq.org/) to run TA and D&T on Windows without problems...but if you do, be warned that the savefiles will not work.

Yes, i'm familiar with github.  I use it with developing Minecraft Land Generator, and I'm also using it with my Clannad and Tomoyo After diagrams I'm creating.

The only issue with contributing, is that I don't know C++, which RLVM is written in.  I know Visual Basic and Java...   I did learn some simple C many years ago, but never used it since.

I've started playing TA under wine.  So far it works, but I've only gotten to the first set of questions...  it will be a few days before i can make enough progress to actually play D&T.

Edit:  i'm currently playing with RLVM and wine at the same time.  its interesting to see the differences.  Wine is much faster, but RLVM looks nicer.

Morlok8k, I'll need to get back to you after I've talked to swiss (the Linux patch expert in our team), but RLVM doesn't really work well with D&T I'm afraid. I'll get back to you with more details, and if there is any way to solve those problems that we know of, I'll be sure to tell you.

yeah, i found out its a known issue with RLVM, due to D&T being loaded as a windows .dll instead of Reallive bytecode.  (the same issue with the baseball minigame in Little Busters)

System: Ubuntu 12.10 64bit, using RLVM to play.

Everything is fine for me except the D&T minigame.

1) its really slow.
2) no sprites show up on the checkerboard play area.
3) values like exp are always shown as 0 or 999, etc.
4) after starting a battle, i immediately get the cleared screen, and move to the next floor, without earning any exp or seeing any battle.

hey guys, I dont know if this has been mentioned anywhere, but i thought i'd share a small experience:

I'm playing TA on linux (Ubuntu specifically), using the RLVM engine.  In order for TA to load, it requires the font "msgothic.ttc" (MS Gothic) to be in the game directory.
I copied it from my Windows 7 computer.

now, MS Gothic is an ugly font.  So i recommend that you copy "ARIALUNI.TTF" (Arial Unicode) instead, and rename it "msgothic.ttc".  it works fine, and looks SO much better!

Visual Novels / My Clannad (& Tomoyo After) diagram project.

So, I figured this would be a good spot to say this.

I'm working on creating a 100% complete diagram of Clannad and Tomoyo After.  I will try to minimize spoilers as much as possible, while still giving detail.

Yes, it is an ambitious project.  I welcome collaborators, if you wish to help out.

I have pretty much completed Clannad Afterstory.  <- check that out to see what the final result will be like.
I'm currently working on Tomoyo After...
Clannad School life is pathetically started.

This is all done using Graphviz Dot, and its hosted on github:
https://github.com/Morlok8k/Clannad_VN_Flowcharts

I decided to do this because having detailed flowcharts was very helpful to have when playing Katawa Shoujo, and i could only find text-based walkthroughs or very simple diagrams (worse than the text-based walkthrough).  With Clannad being as complex as it is, I see the need of this existing.
