General Discussions / How to download via XDCC + additional setup
« on: January 26, 2012, 07:04:27 am »
Now that direct downloads are all pretty much dead and gone, many people will have problems getting their daily fix of anime. Sure, you can torrent, but not every can/wants to for there own reasons. Well, I've made this guide for ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶e̶-̶p̶e̶n̶i̶s̶ you. Ixlone made a pretty straight-forward post on how to setup mIRC to properly use XDCC, so I'm going steal his guide for the setup....
Note: Even though mIRC says it has a 30-day trial, you can still use it without paying. It will just ask for money and sometimes open the mIRC homepage in your browser.

This alone should get you set-up just fine, but here are some supplemental lessons to IRC that you might like to know.

First off head over to mirc homepage and download a copy.
> Install it and run it.
> Click the little orange lightning button in the top left.
> Select the severs menu.
> Find and locate the rizon server (I have deleted all by rizon from my copy, the actual list is a lot bigger) and press the select button.
This will take you to the connect screen, on this screen add in a nickname and then hit connect.
The next thing you will need to do is allow the .mkv file format so that you can receive them. To do this:
> Go to tools on the menu bar and select options.
> Then scroll down to the DCC sub tree and select the ignore tab.
> Now just below where it says "Method:" it will say "ignore only", click it and change it to "accept only".
> In the "File type:" box type "*.mkv" and click add
> Click OK.
Next up type "/join #doki" and you will be in Doki irc channel.
Now to find a show you want. Lets say for example i want to download Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica episode 2 at 1080p. You can see the CRC code in the file name, in this case it's EA001B2A.
In the doki irc channel type "@find EA001B2A".
You will see a return string, in this case:
[20:41] -Doki|Yuki- XDCC SERVER - slots:[19/20], Min:10.0kB/s - /MSG Doki|Yuki XDCC SEND x - Found: #452:[Doki] Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica - 02 (1920x1080 h264 BD FLAC) [EA001B2A].mkv,946M
The important parts here are:
> The command line to use "/MSG Doki|Yuki XDCC SEND x"
> The pack number "Found: #452"
So in order to receive the file you would type "/MSG Doki|Yuki XDCC SEND 452". A warning box will pop up, click OK, then click accept and the download will start.
Another box will pop up at the end letting you know it's complete. As you can see the download speed is generally pretty good.
Note: An alternate way to find the file send message is to click the XDCC link on the release post or at the top of the website and search for/select the file you want, it will pop up the exact line you need. So just copy and paste into mIRC.
This alone should get you set-up just fine, but here are some supplemental lessons to IRC that you might like to know.

Join #Doki on connect
Assuming you're already on #Doki, click the "Favorites" tab and then "Add to favorites". Whenever you connect, click the heart icon to see your favorites. This will save you time connecting in the future. If you enable "Join on connect", you'll do just that when you start up mIRC.
Register your nickname
If you look at the post below this, convert has written a nice text wall on why you should register your nick name. Just in case it's still to hard for you to figure out, I'll hold your hand through it.
First, input the following to register your nickname:
So let's say you want your password to be "dildos" and your email is "[email protected]". You would send:
If you do this correctly, you should have successfully registered your nick. If not, there are two possible reasons why it failed:
1. Someone has already registered that nick
2. You cannot follow simple instructions
Once you successfully register your nick, you must confirm it. Check the email you registered with, and it should have a confirmation message you need to send NickServ. It should look something like this:
Once you send that, your nick is now yours. Whenever you connect, you'll need to send "/ns identify password" to confirm your password. This is rather tedious. Let's automate it.
1. Go to "Tools" > Options > Connect > Options > Perform
2. From the drop-down, select "Rizon" from the network list and put "\ns IDENTIFY password" as the command. Now tick the "Enable perform on connect" and your nick will be registered whenever you start mIRC up. Huzzah!
Change your VHost
As convert mentions below, changing your VHost may be a good idea. Rizon's wiki has a pretty straightforward guide on doing so.
Note: It may take a few minutes for your VHost to be approved.
Change the font
So the mIRC default font more or less sucks. It's sorta hard to read, in my opinion. Let's change it. Go to "View" then click "Font" (should be at the bottom). Change the font to whatever is aesthetically pleasing to you and set it to the default for everything. I personally use Gill Sans MT.

Downloading anime outside of Doki
(click to show/hide)
Anime outside of Doki? Preposterous! If Doki isn't subbing your favorite show, you're going to have to get it elsewhere. So how do you XDCC into other groups? There's multiple ways to do so.
Option 1: Find a nice packlist
If you go to Doki's packlist, you should notice a bot named "Ginpachi-Sensei". It is updated pretty often, and most new releases can be found on it. If not, check Cerebrate. Unlike Doki's packlist, Cerebrate won't give you a nice copy/paste pop-up. You'll have to manually copy/paste it into mIRC with the number of the pack.
For example, let's say I want to download [Ayako-Nishishi]_Softenni_-_11_[400p][390293F1].avi. I send "/msg Cerebrate xdcc send #1".
There many other similar packlists. I'm not going to list them all, but they are generally easy to find. One of the better ones is News is Fabulous, since it links to many different bots.
Option 2: Find it yourself
For whatever reason, if you cannot find what you're looking for on the packlists provided you can still try to find them on the group's site. For Doki, that would be the "XDCC" link that's on every release post. The place to find the packlist link varies between groups, but they are generally easy to find.
Let's say I want a release from Kira Fansubs.
How convenient! They have an easy to find packlist. Ctrl+f "xdcc" on a group's site can also help you find there packlist link if you're having problems finding it.
Note: Sometimes the trigger that sends the files to you won't work on the channel you're on. If you get an error along the lines of "unsupported bot/message", download it from that release group's IRC channel instead. The group should have there IRC channel link in an easy to find place.
Now let's say the group doesn't have an easy to find XDCC packlist like Doki & Kira. Like, Elysium Subs.
First, let's go to their IRC channel.
mIRC should open up and ask you if you wish to join the channel. After accepting it, you can favorite the channel, so you don't have to go back to the group blog every time you want to join.
Look at the triggers; "!packlist" is the droid we are looking for. The name of the trigger varies between group, but if you see something like "!list" in the triggers, give it a go. If all else fails, use every trigger. Trigger spamming is fun.
I still couldn't find what I was looking for!
Well, not everything is available on XDCC, so tough luck. Look at one of the million guides on how to correctly configure torrents and pray that people are seeding what you need.
