Translating songs is quite difficult. I'm listening to Juice Leskinen, one of the greatest songwriters in the history of the Finnish language, and just for the heck of it, I translated one of his songs to English (well, more like modified an earlier translation that I wasn't quite happy with). I aimed for accuracy rather than a form that matches the melody well, but even then it was difficult, since I had to play with the word order. Finnish has a bit more liberal word order in poetic language than English. >.<
Musta aurinko nousee - A Black Sun is RisingTake off my starbelt
Stay until tomorrow
When spirit is strong, even a little work
Is enough to create a world
Be with me tonight as well
Stay until tomorrow
Love me
I love you
Look outside, can you see it?
They're killing each other
Under bloody clothes
Parasites kill their parasites
Be a human for me
When they're killing each other
Love me
I love you
And you smile and look at me like that
You take me to a morning new
Like the first rain of the spring
I can take hold of your soul
You'll take us to the future
And one morning
Right before the dawn
You'll notice that a black
Sun is rising
Take off my starbelt
Stay until the week to follow
This joy won't be consumed by time
It won't collide with the world
A look tender like last night's
Disarms a man
Love me
I love you
And you smile and look at me like that
You take me to a morning new
Like the first rain of the spring
I can take hold of your soul
You'll take us to the future
And one morning
Right before the dawn
You'll notice that a black
Sun is rising
And you smile and look at me like that
You take me to a morning new
Like the first rain of the spring
I can take hold of your soul
You'll take us to the future
And one morning
Right before the dawn
You'll notice that a black
Sun is rising
And I'll smile when I see you
I believe in another time:
Flags won't flutter declaring war
With you I'll rise to a most tender
A morning most sunny
And one morning
Right before the dawn
You'll notice that a black
Sun is rising
