What Anime should I watch?
« on: February 20, 2012, 08:49:35 pm »
First whats the differance between Anime, Cartoons and Manga? is it just where it comes from, 3d,2d or the style?
Is shrek Anime? and Lion king a Cartoon? Familiy guy a cartoon?

anyways I need some Anime reccomendations, Movies or Series.

so far I have seen, in pretty much the order I started watching stuff.

series
Claymore - liked
Ghost in the shell SAC - I liked this but probably only because of the films.
Scrapped Princess - liked the magic alot.
Elfin Lied - Bit random, can't say I remember the plot now.
Darker than black - loved this
Avatar - The last airbender - Really loved this tho there was a fair bit of filler, and a touch childish.. the final episodes where amazing.
Ergo Proxy - liked
Witchblade - seemed a bit soft porn to cover lack of a plot, stopped at about episode 15
Daugters of Mnemosyme - liked this alot but it was very short 6 eps.
Currently about to start Guilty Crown.

Films
FF the spirits within?? does this count, do I include Shrek, and .. Pixar stuff in general?
Spirited Away - liked
Ghost in the shell - Loved this
Ghost in the shell 2 - hmmm
Howls moving castle -  /shrug
clone wars mini - loved some of the over the top aoe melee death in windu's bit.
FF Advent children
Blood the last vampire - not sure I remember
Resident Evil anime films - liked
Princess Mononoke - it was ok
Vampire Hunter D - bit weird
Halo Legends - loved it
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time - liked it
Afro Samurai - was fun
Appleseed - kinda liked this
Appleseed 2 - this too tbh
Escaflone - hmm yea
Akira - loved it tho it felt a bit dated in places and the... plot

anything you can suggest?

Key Production Works

Gurren Lagann

Gundam 00

Strawberry Panic

The Difference

Anime is better. Anime is stuff like Claymore and Ghost in the Shell where you have actual story lines. Cartoons are stuff like Family Guy and Spongebob where there is no set story line.

Of course, that's just an extremely biased opinion...

Technically, anime and manga come from Japan. Most animations from Japan are considered anime. Comics from Japan are considered manga.
I didn't like all those pics in my sig...

My favorite of this season is Ano Natsu de Matteru: It's a great show which moves a bit faster and goes farther beyond the stereotypical romantic comedy.

Other new shows I recommend are Daily Lives of High School Boys for hilarious randomosity and Mouretsu Pirates/Bodacious Space Pirates for a well paced sci-fi story.

Also, the shows in the Enticing to Watch thread are many of my favorites. Just pick a style (Action, Comedy, Drama ...) and see what folks (well, yeah, I've posted a lot there) have loved enough to babble about at length.

Even though it's 3d CGI, Appleseed is still anime - it's animation from Japan.

Finally, did you watch the first Vampire Hunter D movie from 1985 or the second - Bloodlust - from 2000? Your "bit weird" line makes me think you saw the first and I really liked the second.

Technically, anime is just the Japanese term for animation and manga for comics. In practise, us westerners like to call Japanese animation anime and comics manga. By the latter definition, Avatar: The Last Airbender woudn't be anime - but that's what any Japanese person would call it.

For recommendations, this forum is full of that stuff. Hano already linked the Enticing to Watch area, and I could add Your Favourite Anime topic as a place you should check out. For for targeted recommendations, you're going to have to give us at least a genre, preferably other qualifications as well.

um.
Somthing with Magic/Fantasy I guess?
and more adult aimed. (felt things like Avatar / Scrapped princess would be epic if it could move into more adult themes)
Somthing, like Darker than black/Daugters of Mnemosyme.

I just watched 5 Centimetres Per Second(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0983213/), thought it was ok, nice animation but.... a touch dull.

Any more films with Modern animation and a good action plot?

I have SteamBoy / Porco Rosso / Paprika / Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind / Beyond the Clouds - The Promised Place / Ah! My Goddess  Sat on the shelf unwatched.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is supposed to be one of the early "groundbreaking" ones?

http://www.lovefilm.com/search/results/?query=Gunslinger+Girl ?worth a look in???

Also I was looking for 1 single film or episode to show to sombody who has never watched any Anime, as a... starter?

Mature fantasy, eh? Well, to name a few... Berserk comes to mind immediately. Really dark. Umineko no Naku Koro ni is a personal favourite of mine, though it's more mystery than action oriented. The Twelve Kingdoms is my top 1 anime, if you feel like some epic adventure kind, though you'll have to watch about 5 eps before it gets good. The rest is so good it easily makes up for the weak beginning. Hellsing is a vampire thing, a classic, though I'd recommend the OVA Hellsing Ultimate rather than the TV series. Rurouni Kenshin, another classic, is awesome up until it deviates from the original manga after the Shishio-arc.

For a starter anime... well, going with a Miyazaki film might not be a bad idea, seeing as they've been succesful on the Western market as well. Personally I've only seen Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle, but I think they're both very good.

BTW, Avatar is epic, mature or not. <.<
